In my experience, teaching college has been a privilege. It is exciting to interact with people at an important juncture in their lives, and to be able to share topics that I’m enthusiastic about with them.
So far, I have offered courses on the following topics:
- Introductory American Government
- State and Local Government
- Campaigns and Elections
- Public Opinion
- Research Design
- Research Statistics
My course syllabi can be viewed at this link.
I am also happy to share materials with colleagues, especially those who are teaching a course for the first time!
All my courses offer some form of immersive learning. In the introductory course, for example, students grapple with the tradeoffs involved with policymaking by playing the Fiscal Ship game. My campaigns course features a week-long simulation, and in State and Local Government, students “adopt a state” and become our resident expert on its politics and institutions.
Admittedly, these activities take effort to prepare, and not every class session can be a winner.
Still, I feel that students can learn more by doing than by reading or listening. My favorite compliment to receive from students is “Wow, this topic was more interesting than I thought!”
